<p>La nocivité de certaines fines ne dépend pas seulement de la quantité de poussières fines, mais aussi de leur potentiel oxydant, ont découvert des chercheurs de l&#39;Institut suisse Paul Scherrer (PSI) en collaboration avec plusieurs institutions européennes.</p>

<p>Des chercheurs de l&#39;Institut Paul Scherrer (AG) ont découvert que ce n&#39;est pas seulement la quantité de poussières fines qui pose le plus de risques pour la santé. Ce pourrait être principalement leur potentiel oxydant qui définit leur degré de nocivité, indique un communiqué de presse de l&#39;Institut Paul Scherrer. Ils publient leurs résultats mercredi dans la revue spécialisée Nature.</p>

<p>Le potentiel oxydant des particules fines est caractérisé par leur capacité à décomposer les antioxydants, qui peuvent endommager les cellules et les tissus du corps humain. Les chercheurs ont exposé des cellules des voies respiratoires humaines à des échantillons de particules fines tout en surveillant leur réponse biologique. Ils ont ainsi réussi à montrer que des particules fines à fort potentiel oxydant induisent une réaction inflammatoire dans les cellules.</p>

<p>&quot;Cette découverte ne prouve pas encore clairement l&#39;existence d&#39;une relation de cause à effet entre un potentiel oxydant élevé et un risque pour la santé&quot;, admet Kaspar Dällenbach du laboratoire de chimie atmosphérique du PSI, cité dans le communiqué de presse. «Mais l&#39;étude est encore un autre indice que cette relation existe», poursuit-il.</p>

<p>Les chercheurs ont également retracé l&#39;origine des fines particules collectées à différents endroits en Suisse. Des chercheurs français ont ensuite déterminé le potentiel oxydant de ces mêmes échantillons afin d&#39;obtenir leur indice de nocivité.</p>

<p>Les particules à fort potentiel oxydant, et donc particulièrement nocives, proviennent principalement du chauffage au bois, et les métaux de l&#39;abrasion des freins et des pneumatiques dans la circulation routière. La majorité des particules, uniquement composées de poussières minérales et d&#39;aérosols, comme le nitrate et le sulfate d&#39;ammonium, seraient moins nocives.</p>

<p>«Nos résultats montrent que les sources qui déterminent le potentiel oxydant des particules et les sources qui déterminent leur quantité ne sont pas les mêmes», résume Kaspar Dällenbach. Les zones urbaines ne sont pas exposées à de plus grandes quantités de particules fines, mais dans ces régions, les poussières fines ont un potentiel oxydant plus important et sont donc plus nocives pour la santé que les particules fines dans les zones rurales.</p>
